Welcome to my channel! I'm a realist painter and teacher, living and working in the heart of the Cotswolds in the UK.
Here you'll find tutorial videos on all manner of topics related to painting, specifically oil painting: Still life set up ideas, flower painting tutorials, colour mixing videos - especially the Munsell colour system - and specific tutorials on how to paint silver, glass etc in oils.
Mostly though, I try to focus on the fundamentals of oil painting - the things that you need no matter what your subject: Composition, drawing, values edge handling and colour - all with oil painting.
I live stream painting from my studio occasionally (for free), usually just hwatever I happen to be working on at the time - most often flower painting in oils.
Although the live sessions are very informal, inevitably I end up teaching a bit as people ask questions. Feel to ask your own as we go along.
Subscribe to see live each stream and new tutorial videos as I upload them!

Just found your channel. Really concise and uncomplicated teaching, very helpful! Hello from Golden Bay New Zealand. Middle of winter here.
Thanks very much! I keep thinking I should make shorter videos, but the live sessions always end up being rather long. So I'm very happy that you used the word "consise" :)
❤thank you, this was very helpful. First time seeing this!
Bonjour je vous regarde de Nîmes dans le sud de la France et vous remercie pour ce travail.
I'm looking from Italy❤
Loving your painting from Wellington New Zealand.
You are such an inspiration. Getting me painting 💚
I don't hear your stomach growling at all. Lol. Idk what you're talking about. 😅 watching from southern California 2 hours north of San Diego, 1 hour south of LA
Well that's good. Sometimes it comes out on the mic :)
Brisbane Australia. 👋
👍
There is such a beautiful stillness in your paintings. A feeling of serenity. Are your paintings also available as prints?
Thanks Hannah! I have a few available as prints, yes: www.learning-to-see.co.uk/product-category/prints
I'm watching from Sydney, on a cold sunny Saturday morning
Thank you Paul. Learned alot! Looking forward to another session and more on doing those shadows. Great composition!
This is so helpful, and a great painting. Can’t wait for the next one!
Where are you Paul? My first time watching you!
Hahmie in south suburb of Seattle, WA. 3:25pm
Posting A Vlog makes my day so much ❤ whenever I need a smile 😊
11 am in seattle
Julie in seattle joining you.
Beautiful. Love the colour palette. Thanks
Thank you so much for the recommendation. I bought the Chroma-Magic app which I think will be useful. Playing with my colours now I was wondering whether it is better to get the tonal value right first (b&w) before adding colour as I have a hard job differentiating the scale once it’s added. Love the painting!
Definitely value first
You are absolutely correct about painting on a black ground. I once painted a portrait over a black gessoed board. After three layers of color, the black continued to come through. Oops! Never did it again.
Yes it would just seem an odd idea, given that oil paint is partially transparent, and becomes more so as it ages!
Hello from California! Thank you❤
Love this way of ragging off. It gives you a great idea if it’s going to work or not. 💙
What classes do you run?
I used to paint in oils then moved to acrylics. I had done this method. You’ve inspired me to retry this. Thanks so much for posting
Bonjour merveilleux pour moi, c’est ainsi que je travaille enfin, j’essaie, par les valeurs, les claires puis les foncées et l’intérmediaire la couleur du fond. Merci beaucoup. Un bonjour de la France du Sud.
I brought the ChromaMagic app and it’s helped me hit the colour notes. Training my eye for colour and allowed me to be more expressive and experimental in my work. Thank you Paul for your wisdom and encouraging support. I’m so glad I recently found your channel.
That's so good to hear. I've been hearing amazing feedback from other people who've tried it too. I wonder if the phrase "game changer" is actually relevant here!
@@PaulFoxton yes absolutely it’s “a game changer”
Where did you get the cremnitz white from
gorgeous Paul!
Thank you!
It already looks beautiful!
At 42:15
@@aidamarkiw Thank you :)
Motivos inspiradores!!! Suas lives são impressionantes!!!!❤❤❤
Williamsburg makes a lovely lead white
Thakns, I'll see if I can get some.
Is it dangerous to sand on cremnitz white (lead white)?
If you're going to do it you should wear a mask. The sanding I do is pretty light though.
I’ve been afraid to ask about Banjo. I haven’t heard him lately and was afraid the move might have been too much stress for him so I was happy to hear him. 😊
He's doing fine. Very old now, and losing his balance, but eating well and happy. When he's not demanding snuggles, he spends most of his time poking about and snoozing in the sun in the farm yard.
You can nudge though…
That is beautiful already
Love these ‘ghost’ images
Will you have to thin that if you are going to do a wipe out
Ouch , £100…
While watching this video, I thought there was a couple pieces of dirt on my screen. Naturally I tried wiping it off. Then, I realized it was the marks placed on the canvas for the placement of the flower! Don't I feel stupid now! I watched him do that and forgot momentarily that he did! I'll blame it on Old age, that's what it was.😂
😆
Thank you learned a lot again
The lightest light looks the hardest to get right
Wow!
Color study
This is THE BEST video I’ve ever seen about setting up still life. Thank you sooo much.
Do you need to fill out a form to get your lead white? When I looked it up it said I do.My mam is going to Australia soon and I was planning on getting her to bring back some stack lead white but I see little sense in getting used to something I can't have.I use Michael's Hardings warm white. Is there much difference between that and the rublev lead white that you know of?
i have the williamsburg neutrals set...dont care for them as they are very gritty which drives me nuts!!
what is the panel that you are working on?
It's an Ampersand Gessobord panel, 10 x 8 inches.
